Vision Community Unites in Official Letter to Congress Opposing NEI Consolidation Proposal

Vision Stakeholders Urge Congress to Maintain the Independence of the National Eye Institute to Preserve Critical Advancements in Vision Research

NAEVR/AEVR, along with leaders within the vision community have come together in a formal letter to Congress, expressing significant concern over a recent House proposal to consolidate the National Eye Institute (NEI) into a broader Institute on Neuroscience and Brain Research. Signed by 92 organizations representing patients, providers, researchers, and other stakeholders, the letter underscores the critical importance of maintaining the NEI as a distinct entity within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The letter underscores that the NEI’s specialized focus has been crucial in driving groundbreaking advancements in vision research, with significant implications for both eye health and broader medical science. Key achievements such as gene therapy for inherited eye diseases, stem cell-based treatments for age-related macular degeneration, and the development of cutting-edge imaging technologies like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) are directly tied to the NEI’s dedicated efforts. The signatories express deep concern that consolidating the NEI into a larger neuroscience institute would dilute the focus and resources essential for continuing this vital work. Vision research requires a unique and concentrated approach, given the complex and distinct nature of eye diseases, many of which do not directly involve the central or peripheral nervous systems. To ensure that vision research remains a national priority, leading to innovations that improve the quality of life for millions of Americans, it is crucial to maintain the NEI’s independence.

We strongly encourage you to read the full sign-on letter to understand the collective voice of the vision community and the urgent need to protect the NEI’s specialized focus within the NIH.
