Deadline: May 29, 2026
Audience: Congressional Appropriations Committees
Purpose: Support robust funding for the National Eye Institute and NIH

Alliance for Vision Research is leading a FY27 organizational sign-on letter to Congressional appropriations leaders urging strong federal support for the NEI, preservation of NEI independence, and sustained investment in vision research.

The letter also calls on Congress to reject harmful policy proposals impacting NIH funding stability, including universal forward funding and arbitrary indirect cost caps. Organizations, institutions, companies, and advocacy groups across the vision community are invited to join this unified effort to help ensure vision research remains a national public health and biomedical research priority.

Past sign-on letters

Advocacy in Action

Alliance for Vision Research and its partners regularly engage policymakers through coordinated sign-on letters that reflect the shared priorities of the vision community. These letters highlight the importance of federal investment in research, policies that accelerate innovation, and initiatives that improve outcomes for patients affected by blinding diseases.

FY26 NIH Appropriations Letter

A broad coalition of medical, scientific, and patient advocacy organizations urges Congress to swiftly pass a final FY2026 appropriations bill that protects the National Institutes of Health and provides at least $48.7 billion in funding to sustain lifesaving research, avoid disruptions to grants, and preserve the infrastructure that supports biomedical innovation.

Opposing NIH/NEI Cuts and Consolidation

A coalition representing patients, providers, researchers, and industry urges Congress to prioritize vision health in the FY2026 appropriations bill by protecting the NEI as a dedicated institute within NIH, rejecting proposed indirect cost caps, and increasing NEI funding to $1 billion to advance research that prevents blindness and improves health outcomes.

Support the Joint Associations Group on Indirect Costs

A coalition of 164 national organizations urges Congress to support the Joint Associations Group’s effort to create a more transparent model for funding essential research infrastructure costs and to prevent arbitrary federal caps on indirect (F&A) costs that would undermine U.S. scientific research and innovation.
