Congressional Briefing Highlights the Urgent Need for Continued Investment in Inherited Retinal Disease Research

Alliance for Vision Research recently convened a Congressional Briefing on Inherited Retinal Diseases (IRDs), bringing together congressional staff, researchers, clinicians, patient advocates, and industry leaders to discuss the profound impact of these rare genetic conditions and the groundbreaking research offering new hope to patients and families affected by vision loss and blindness.

Inherited Retinal Diseases are a group of genetic disorders that can cause progressive vision loss and, in many cases, blindness. More than 300 genes have been linked to IRDs, making them among the most complex genetic diseases in medicine. Many IRDs begin in childhood or early adulthood, affecting independence, education, employment, and quality of life for decades.

The briefing featured presentations from leading experts and advocates, including Daniel C. Chung, DO, MA, Chief Medical Officer of Beacon Therapeutics, Amy M. Laster, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer of Foundation Fighting Blindness, and Lindsey Rambo, M.Ed., Patient Advocate with Foundation Fighting Blindness, who shared both the scientific advances and personal realities surrounding inherited retinal diseases. Their presentations highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, genetic testing, continued innovation in gene therapies and emerging treatments, and sustained federal investment in vision research.

Attendees learned how advances in genetics, retinal imaging, and precision medicine are transforming the outlook for many patients living with IRDs. What was once considered an area with few treatment options is now one of the most promising fields in vision science, demonstrating the tremendous value of long-term investment in research and innovation.

Alliance for Vision Research extends its sincere gratitude to our distinguished speakers and to the organizations that helped make this important discussion possible. Special thanks to our sponsors: Alkeus Pharmaceuticals, ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology), Beacon Therapeutics, Foundation Fighting Blindness, and Research to Prevent Blindness for their continued commitment to advancing vision research and improving outcomes for patients living with inherited retinal diseases.

“As scientific breakthroughs continue to accelerate, it is critical that policymakers understand both the challenges facing patients with inherited retinal diseases and the extraordinary opportunities research provides to preserve and restore vision,” said Dan Ignaszewski, Executive Director of Alliance for Vision Research. “Federal investment in vision research is helping turn scientific possibilities into real treatments and renewed hope for millions of Americans.”

Alliance for Vision Research remains committed to educating policymakers about the importance of sustained federal support for vision research and ensuring that patients, researchers, clinicians, and advocates have a strong voice in shaping the future of scientific discovery.

Together, we can help Congress #SeeWhatMatters and continue advancing the research that brings hope to individuals and families affected by inherited retinal diseases.
