Alliances Celebrate Success of 2024 Emerging Vision Scientist Program

Washington, D.C. – The National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) and Alliance for Eye and Vision Research are proud to announce the incredible success of the 2024 Emerging Vision Scientist Program, which brought together 34 of the brightest early-career vision scientists from across the country. Through this program, participants gained invaluable experience in advocacy and education, raising awareness about the importance of federally funded vision research. This year, the program was further strengthened through the Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) Sponsorship, which played a pivotal role in supporting the development of these young scientists. The collaboration with RPB underscores the collective commitment to fostering the next generation of researchers while ensuring that advocacy remains at the forefront of these efforts.

One of the participants from this year’s program, Dr. Gustavo Gameiro, a Research Fellow at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, shared his enthusiasm for the program. “Being a part of the Emerging Vision Scientist Program has been a transformative experience. I had the opportunity to speak directly with lawmakers about the importance of vision research and how it impacts patients’ lives. The advocacy training provided me with skills that I will carry throughout my career, and I feel empowered to make a difference both in the lab and in policy.”

The Alliances’ Executive Director, Dan Ignaszewski, emphasized the critical role of the Emerging Vision Scientist Program plays in fostering the future of vision research and advocacy. “The Emerging Vision Scientist Program is truly a cornerstone of our advocacy efforts. We are not only training these young scientists to excel in their research but also giving them the tools to advocate for the funding that drives innovation. Their voices are essential in ensuring that Congress continues to support vision research that changes lives. We’re excited about the impact they will make in both science and policy.”

Participants in the program engaged in briefings with members of Congress and their staff, discussing key issues such as the NIH Reform Proposal and the importance of maintaining robust funding for the National Eye Institute (NEI). Their personal stories and scientific expertise made a powerful case for why sustained federal investment in vision research is crucial for improving patient outcomes and driving innovation in treatments and cures.

With continued support from industry and partners like RPB, the Alliances are excited to encourage young vision scientists to apply for next year’s Emerging Vision Scientist Program. Participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with policymakers, advocate for their research, and form lasting connections with fellow leaders in the field.
