AEVR ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER 18 EVENTS: RELEASE OF A NEW NATIONAL PUBLIC OPINION POLL ON VISION AND CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFING ON AGING EYE DISEASE

(Washington, D.C.) Since September is Healthy Aging Month, the week of September 15 is International Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Week, and September 18 is the Rally for Medical Research Advocacy Day, AEVR has chosen that day to conduct the following educational events. Release Event: AEVR/Research!America Study The Publicís Attitudes About Vision Loss and a new Vision and Blindness Fact Sheet
9:30 am, Zenger Room, National Press Club (529 14th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.)

Funded by a grant from Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB), AEVR has joined with Research!America to commission the latest polling about the publicís attitudes about vision and potential vision loss. Since similar polling was conducted by RPB in the 1960s, AEVR/R!A will compare those findings to that in 2014-especially in light of the aging population and the growth of minorities. AEVR/R!A will also release an updated Vision and Blindness fact sheet.

An expert panel moderated by Michelle Miller (CBS News) will discuss the poll findings in relation to vision research. Panel members include:

  • Neil Bressler, M.D., the James P. Gills Professor of Ophthalmology and Chief of the Retina Division,Wilmer Eye Institute/Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
  • Paul Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., the Director of the National Eye Institute (NEI) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • James Tsai, M.D., President of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and Chair of Ophthalmology for the Mount Sinai Health System
  • Karla Zadnik, O.D., Ph.D., the Glenn Fry Professor of Optometry and Physiological Optics and Dean at the Ohio State University College of Optometry
