In announcing the speakers, AEVR/NAEVR Executive Director James Jorkasky noted that the participation by Mr. Shapiro-a patient with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) who has been a participant in the NEIís Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS)-adds a poignancy to the evening. "Despite his visual impairment, Mr. Shapiro remains active and involved, serving on the Montgomery County (Maryland) Board of Property Review. He embodies the spirit of the AEVR and NAEVR mission to educate and advocate on behalf of the value of vision research and literally brings the fact sheet to life." Jorkasky also expressed his appreciation to NEI Director Dr. Paul Sieving for his participation, adding that, "As the leader of our nationís federal commitment to prevent blindness and save and restore sight, Dr. Sieving can articulate the incredible NEI breakthroughs that have emerged during the 15-year history of the AEVR/NAEVR alliances."
