NAEVR AND AEVR JOIN VISION COMMUNITY IN HIGHLIGHTING IMPACT OF COMBAT-RELATED EYE INJURIES AND RARE EYE DISEASES AT CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFINGS

(Washington, D.C.) Today, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) and Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR) announced their sponsorship with other major vision community organizations of two Congressional Briefings, to be held the week of October 29, that expand the message about the value of vision research. These include:

  • Through the Eyes of a Soldier: A Congressional Briefing on Combat-Related Eye Injuries, to be held on Monday, October 29, at 2 pm in Room HC-6 of the U.S. Capitol. Representatives from the Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will describe the types of combat-related eye injuries being experienced by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, including those from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and the steps being taken to coordinate treatment and follow-up care/rehabilitation.

Co-hosted by the Congressional Vision Caucus, the briefing is being sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Optometric Association, Blinded Veterans Association, NAEVR, and Prevent Blindness America. These organizations have joined to support H.R. 3558, the Military Eye Trauma Treatment Act, which is legislation that would improve the tracking, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of eye injuries incurred by service members in combat.

  • Rare Eye Diseases: On the Brink of Breakthroughs, to be held Wednesday, October 31, at 12 Noon in House Rayburn B-369. AEVR is joining with the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) to report on the cutting edge research into rare neurodegenerative diseases. Privately funded research conducted by FFB, in conjunction with federally funded research conducted by the National Eye Institute (NEI) within the National Institutes on Health (NIH), is offering hope to the more than 9 million Americans experiencing vision loss from rare neurodegenerative eye diseases, many of which strike young individuals, affecting their productivity, independence, and quality of life.

National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) is a nonprofit advocacy coalition comprised of 55 professional, patient, consumer, and industry organizations involved in eye and vision research. Founded in 1997, NAEVR’s goal is to achieve the best vision for all Americans through advocacy and public education for eye and vision research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Eye Institute (NEI), and other federal research entities. Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR) is a nonprofit coalition dedicated to educating Congress and the public about the importance of federal funding for eye and vision research. Founded in 1993, AEVR is the first organization of its kind to bring together stakeholders in the research community—including ophthalmic and optometric professionals, patient and consumer group, and industry—to speak with a unified voice about the economic and societal value of eye and vision research.
