President Issues FY2011 Budget Proposing 3.2 Percent Increase in NIH Funding, 2.4 Percent Increase in NEI Funding, Per NEI Congressional Justification

Legislative Update
February 1, 2010

The President today released his Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 budget proposal which included a $1 billion, or 3.2% increase, in funding for the National Institutes of Health, from $31.2 billion in FY2010 to $32.2 billion.

The National Eye Institute (NEI) would receive an increase of $17.3 million, or 2.4 percent, to a level of $724.36, from the FY2010 level of $707.04 million. The NEI has posted its Congressional Justification for their funding level.

ARVO Annual Meeting Program Committee members participated in an Advocacy Day last Friday in which they requested that the NIH be funded at $35 billion, which reflects the FY2010 level of plus $4 billion, which reflects the half of the $8 billion that the stimulus bill gave to research that was split between FY2009 and FY2010.
