NAEVR Hosts VCE Director Dr. Donald Gagliano and Deputy Director
Dr. Claude Cowan in Visits With The Vision Community

Legislative Update
December 17, 2008

Since Colonel Donald Gagliano, M.D., and Claude Cowan, Jr., M.D., were named as the Director and Deputy Director, respectively, of the Vision Center of Excellence (VCE), NAEVR has been introducing them to key members of the vision community, as well as to key federal agencies engaged in the funding of research and approval of new ophthalmic drugs and devices—especially to facilitate collaboration between these government entities.

The VCE and an accompanying Military Eye Injury Registry is a Department of Defense (DOD) program that will coordinate with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). It will be headquartered in the Washington, D.C. area and will coordinate with Clinical Centers of Excellence around the country at existing medical centers. Although the VCE is a program separate from the DODís Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP), in which vision research has been designated as its own line item in Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 and funded at $4 million, the VCA/Injury Registry will provide useful input on the nature of combat-related eye injuries that can help define the PRMRP vision research portfolio.
